The Bibites 0.3.0 : Artificial Life With Herding and Viruses


Hey Everyone!

Today is a big day.
THE BIGGEST PUBLIC UPDATE EVER IN THE HISTORY OF THE BIBITES

After more than a year, a new version is finally out.
It's been so long I even have trouble identifying everything that's new compared to what you had.


NEW UI and Simulation Settings!

First of all, I decided to make the full version public and completely free. For the last year, my supporters (on Patreon) were the only ones who had access to frequent updates and that had the capacity to control every setting to play around in the simulation. I made the choice to give this ability to everyone instead. 

You now have the capacity to test a functionally infinite number of scenarios through the tuning of settings in the main menu before starting the simulation. I think right now 63 settings are exposed (don't quote me on that number) for you to experiment with, allowing you to test any scenarios you might think of. "What if Bibites were far heavier?", "What if there was no friction and drag?", "what if the food was really scarce?"

This should allow you to test out any scenarios you might think of!

Aside from that, many, many new functionalities and systems:


Herding:

Bibites moving in a coordinated manner

Bibites now have the capacity to form herds. They have a new neuron to trigger and scale that behavior depending on their evolved brain structure. They also have 4 genes to tune and adapt that behavior to different situations. So far I've observed many interesting adaptations using that new neuron and it makes for beautiful scenes sometimes!

My last video (at the time of writing) goes into great length to explain the functioning of that new behavior:

Viruses have joined the Bibites Simulation!

They tend to infect hosts and spread through the air or through touch depending on the virus. They display very complex dynamics, which I detail in more detail in one of my videos:


Saving and Loading Simulations, as well as individual Bibites!

You now have the capacity to save and load Bibites and Simulations! 
Want to close your computer? Save the simulation and open it another time.
You can save your favorite bibites and introduce them to other simulations, or share them with you friend to compare which bibites are the best.

"Continents"



Now, food is spawned in small patches that slowly move through time. As a result, you have continents of food that merge, split, condense, expand, and so on, giving a far more dynamic landscape!


New and Improved UI


I mean, don't misunderstand me, we still have a long way to go before this is standard, but hey, we are far from where we started.


And so much more:

  • Collision damages
  • Throwing capacity (bibites throwing pellets and other bibites)
  • Reviewing brain and gens from eggs
  • Health and Energy bar on selected bibite
  • Virus strains
  • Changing the background luminosity (black to white)
  • So many new settings to play with
  • An incredible amount of bug fixes and minor improvements
  • And so many more new things that I can't even remember
